Salmon is one of the few "can my dog eat this" answers that is a straightforward yes, with conditions. It is palatable protein and it carries the two omega-3 fats that come up most often in canine nutrition. The conditions matter though, and one widely repeated warning about raw salmon turns out to be geographically specific in a way most UK articles do not mention. Is salmon good for dogs?
In short: Cooked salmon is a good source of protein and one of the richest food sources of the long-chain omega-3 fats EPA and DHA. Those fats are among the most studied nutrients in canine nutrition.
Salmon is an oily fish, which is what makes it interesting nutritionally. Alongside protein, it carries eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), the two long-chain omega-3 fats that dogs cannot manufacture efficiently from plant sources. Fish oils and their role in dogs and cats have been reviewed in the veterinary literature, including Bauer's 2011 review in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association.
It is worth being straight about the regulatory position, because it is rarely mentioned. FEDIAF's Nutritional Guidelines, in the September 2025 edition, state that current information is insufficient to recommend a specific level of omega-3 fatty acids for adult dogs. They do set a minimum for growth: 0.05 g of EPA plus DHA per 100 g dry matter, or 0.13 g per 1,000 kcal metabolisable energy. So for adult dogs, omega-3 is an area of genuine and active interest rather than a settled requirement with a number attached. Anyone telling you otherwise is ahead of the evidence. It is worth being precise about what is missing, though. The gap in the evidence is around whether omega-3 is essential for survival. There is considerable evidence for its benefits. FEDIAF sets minimums to prevent deficiency rather than levels for optimal health, which is a different question entirely.

Salmon is also a good source of vitamin D. This can run low in some diets, raw diets in particular, and salmon or salmon oil is a highly bioavailable source. Vitamin D plays an important role in calcium metabolism and the immune system, and dogs need to obtain it from a food source rather than being able to absorb it through their skin as we can.
Can dogs eat raw salmon?
In short: Better not. Raw fish can carry parasites and bacteria, and cooking removes that risk entirely. The specific "salmon poisoning" warning you will have read about is a Pacific Northwest problem, not a British one, but that is not a reason to feed raw salmon.
Search this topic and you will find dozens of UK articles warning about salmon poisoning disease. Here is the accurate picture. Salmon poisoning disease is caused by the organism Neorickettsia helminthoeca, which dogs pick up from a fluke, Nanophyetus salmincola, carried by raw or undercooked salmonid fish. According to the MSD Veterinary Manual, infected fish are found in the Pacific Ocean from San Francisco to the coast of Alaska, with the disease most prevalent from northern California to Puget Sound. It has also been reported in southern California and Brazil.
In other words, it is a North American Pacific coast disease. Repeating it as a general warning to British dog owners, without saying where it occurs, is the kind of copied-and-pasted content this blog tries not to be.
That said, the answer is still no to raw salmon. Raw fish of any kind can carry other parasites and bacteria, and there is no nutritional argument strong enough to justify the risk when cooking solves it. If you feed raw and want to include fish, that is a conversation to have with a nutritionist or your vet about sourcing and freezing protocols, not something to improvise. Raw fish raises a separate concern around B vitamins, thiamine in particular, and can be a cause of neurological problems.
The bones, the skin and the smoked salmon question
In short: Bones are the biggest practical hazard, so remove every one. Plain cooked skin is fine in small amounts and is fatty. Smoked salmon is not suitable because of the salt.
Bones. Salmon bones are small, sharp and easy to miss. They can lodge in the mouth or throat or cause damage further down. Check the fillet carefully by hand before serving, and do not assume a supermarket fillet is boneless just because it says so.
Skin. Plain cooked salmon skin, with nothing on it, is not harmful, but it is where much of the fat sits. A small piece is fine. A whole crisped skin, cooked in oil, is a lot of fat for a dog in one sitting and can cause an upset stomach.
Smoked salmon. No. Smoked salmon is cured with a significant amount of salt, and that is the problem rather than the smoking itself. The same applies to any salmon that has been brined, marinated or seasoned.
Tinned salmon. Tinned salmon in spring water, drained, with no added salt, is the usable version. Tinned in brine or oil is not.
How to serve salmon to a dog
In short: Cook it through with no oil or seasoning, let it cool, flake it and check for bones, then serve it as a topper rather than a meal.
Bake, steam or poach it plain. No salt, no butter or oil, and nothing from the allium family: garlic and onion are not suitable for dogs in any form. Cook it until it is opaque all the way through rather than leaving the centre translucent.
Let it cool, then flake it with your fingers so you can feel for bones as you go. Serve it over your dog's normal food.
On quantity, the sensible frame is the one that applies to all extras: treats and toppers should stay a small share of daily intake, with the bulk of the diet coming from properly balanced food. Salmon is calorie-dense and fatty, so a little goes a long way. Introduce it gradually the first few times and watch how your dog handles it.
Which dogs should skip it
In short: Dogs with a diagnosed fish allergy, dogs on a controlled or elimination diet, and dogs with pancreatitis or a history of it, unless your vet says otherwise.
Fish allergy in dogs is less common than chicken or beef allergy but it does exist. If your dog is on a veterinary elimination diet, do not add anything, including salmon, without asking first, because it defeats the point of the trial. And because salmon is relatively high in fat, dogs with pancreatitis or a fat-sensitive condition should only have it on veterinary advice.
